The Nambikwara
These photographs are taken during the preproduction trip in 2007 for the documentary Claude Lévi-Strauss: Auprès de l'Amazonie (2008), directed by Marcelo Fortaleza Flores. In the course of this trip to the Wakalitesu and Sarare villages in Mato Grosso, Brazil, Marcelo and Murat also developed the idea of a photographic portrait of the Nambikwara—in part inspired by Lévi-Strauss's Saudades do Brasil: A Photographic Memoir—which is currently in progress. A selection of the photographs in this section have appeared in the November 2008 issue of the French edition of National Geographic to illustrate the article Retour sous les tropiques discussing Lévi-Strauss's journey to the Amazon in 1938 and the revisiting of that journey in Claude Lévi-Strauss: Auprès de l'Amazonie.
